This workshop will be in partnership with the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University.
We will examine how Italian filmmakers use journeys to explore universal human experiences, with the road serving as both a physical path and metaphorical symbol. Through films like Fellini's "La Strada" (1954), Rossellini's "Viaggio in Italia" (1954) and Risi's "Il Sorpasso" (1962), we'll see how characters navigate literal and metaphorical roads, facing the promise of transformation and the peril of disillusionment. Moretti's "Caro Diario" (1993) and Rosi's "Sacro GRA" (2013) offer unique perspectives on the road as a liminal space where the known meets the unknown.
OLLI members should view these films on their own before class. Mike LoMonico, Andrea Fedi and members of the Stony Brook faculty will each introduce a film and lead a discussion in class.
On Fridays, 10:15-11:30, at the Center for Italian Studies, F. Melville Jr. Memorial Library, E-4340. On April 4 and only on this date, we will be meeting in SAC 306.
